The old Barbec’s on Garland Road has been leased to a restaurant.

A certificate of occupancy application has been submitted for a quick-service restaurant with a drive-thru to operate at 8949 Garland Road, near White Rock Lake. Popeyes is the name of the business listed on the application.

Some applications for construction permits have also been submitted. Popeyes is listed on those, too.

A representative of the firm handling the lease confirmed that the site is being leased to a restaurant but could not disclose which one. Popeyes has not responded to questions from the Advocate.

In the East Dallas area, there are Popeyes locations on Ross Avenue near Fitzhugh, on I-30 at Jim Miller Road and on East Northwest Highway at Jupiter Road.

Founders Barry and Becky Brown opened Barbec’s in 1978 in a building that had been a Howard Johnson restaurant. Barbec’s, a name that comes from a mash-up of the first three letters of Barry and Becky, served comfort foods such as hamburgers, chicken fried steak, meatloaf and catfish. It was well-known for its beer biscuits.

In 1999, the Browns sold the restaurant to Mehdi Kalafchi and Abe Ghodsi.

Barbec’s has been closed since October 2020, when a fire broke out in the kitchen. The Advocate reported at the time that the fire caused $175,000 in damage.

We will provide updates if we learn more.

Editor’s note (July 18): A previous version of this story referred to the leasing company as the property owner.
