“The only respectable way to have beer for breakfast.”

That is the slogan the local favorite, Barbec’s. Good luck finding a parking spot, and if the line is out the door, there is a reason, so get in it.
If you are hungry for large, sweet, beer biscuits and sausage gravy without regard for ingesting an innumerable amount of calories, Barbec’s is your place.

Classy environment? No. Competent wait-staff? Hit or miss. Fantastic biscuits and gravy? Heck yes.

My husband and I learned early on that the Barbec’s menu (although massive) isn’t always quality. Therefore, we order the beer biscuits with a bowl of sausage gravy, and two eggs each. And being the “Junk Foodie” that I am, an extra dash of salt and a king-size Dr. Pepper are both a must.

Another house special is Flap & Cluck with Oink (pancakes, eggs, and choice of meat). Clever, huh? However, I don’t recommend going to Barbec’s without trying the biscuits and sausage gravy—I can confidently say that you won’t find any that compare.

Editor’s note: Candace Tharp has a blog called “Junk Foodie”, where she writes about her experiences at neighborhood eateries. From her refreshing disregard for calorie, fat and carb count — we say she earns the name. (And from her blog photo that portrays a svelte young mother we say, “No fair!”)

One more note about Barbec’s—like all the places mentioned in our June feature, “Loose Change Lunches“, Barbec’s features a sub-$5 lunch menu.
