It seems Lincoln Property Co. is in a hurry to redevelop the White Rock YMCA building. The Y today announced plans to move temporarily across Gaston to Lakeview Centre, the two-story retail center where Subway is a ground-floor tenant.

The YMCA plans to take the top floor of Lakeview Centre until its new facility is completed. That project is still in the planning stages but is expected to be open as early as summer 2014.

“There has been strong interest from potential tenants for this space which will afford an opportunity to accelerate the development timeline for the entire corner,” YMCA executive director Derek Smith writes in a letter to members.

Lincoln is buying the building on Gaston that houses the YMCA and Far West night club. The real estate company also bought Lakeview Centre, the former Backyard bar and other property at the intersection of Garland and Gaston, with plans to redevelop the corner. The YMCA plans to build a new facility on the site of the former Trinity Lutheran Church on Gaston at Loving.

The Y’s temporary space comprises about 16,000 square feet. That’s a tad bigger than the current location. The Y will lose access to the pool and basketball gym, but they are working to find alternative locations for aquatics and basketball programs. The move is expected to take place between mid-October and mid-November, Smith says.
