On Friday, Nov. 3, close friends, family and former coworkers gathered during a luncheon in honor of Trigger Butler, the first recipient of the Trigger Butler Impact Award. Butler, a beloved St. John’s Teacher from 1991 to 2012.

Meshea Matthews, Head of School and founder of the Trigger Butler Impact Award said after she met Butler five years ago, there was no doubt in her mind she wanted to dedicate an award.

The annual award, which took four years to create, is presented to a person or group of people to celebrate their impact on the St. John’s community. Nominees must embody the School’s mission.

Speakers at the event described Butler’s unique teaching style. She taught by having fun, dressing up and connecting children with their learnings outside of traditional studies through plays or projects.

“It wasn’t about spelling or reading or writing and grades. It was more about finding a child’s inner spirit,” Tom Butler, Trigger’s son said.
