Dallas police officer Kevin Marceau died in a Grapevine hospital Friday, more than 14 years after the accident near White Rock Lake that left him brain damaged.

Marceau was off duty on the night of Nov. 14, 1996, when he chased two men on foot who were fleeing the scene of an accident. A car struck Marceau on Garland Road at Fuller, and he sustained massive brain and leg injuries. The woman who hit Marceau said she didn’t see him, and she never was charged with a crime related to the accident.

Marceau, a Gulf War veteran who had been with the department since 1990, had a 4-month-old son at the time of the accident. Although he was never the same after the accident, family members say Marceau was aware of his surroundings and got to watch his son grow into a teenager.
