Geneva Heights is one of several schools slated for a tear-down and rebuild as part of the 2020 bond package.

In previous meetings, community members had highlighted several goals they had for the school redesign, including adapting to growth while keeping a close-knit environment, remaining a “gem” in the neighborhood and reflecting the diversity of the community.

The building was originally built in 1931, and additions were constructed in 1956 and 1995. As of the Nov. 3 meeting, the architects were committed to maintaining the original two-story building from 1931.

At the Nov. 3, 2021 meeting, neighbors were presented with the site plan and two concepts. It wasn’t intended to be an either-or decision, but rather an opportunity for neighbors to choose the best ideas.

The site plan calls for a new two-story classroom building, and the two-story 1931 building will have a new kitchen and dining areas. There will also be a new gymnasium, which will double as a storm shelter, a basketball court, two playgrounds, gardens, a field and an outdoor-learning space.

Planners have included a fence around the parking lot, playgrounds, field and garden.

Three drop-off and pick-up areas will be available, and the main entry on Goodwin Avenue will have a secure vestibule.

The property for the school, which is surrounded by residences on all sides, is smaller than other elementary school sites, at 4.5 acres compared to the typical 12-15 acres for this kind of school.

One main difference between the two concepts is the placement of the garden and playground areas. Many neighbors preferred the playgrounds to be together and more centrally located on the campus.
