It was a year ago today when Dallas was united in tragedy. Five officers were murdered following a Black Lives Matter protest when an Army Reserve veteran ambushed the public servants working that night.

The tragedy touched everyone, but some lives were forever changed. Woodrow graduate Maria Zamarripa lost her stepson, Officer Patricio Zamarripa, that night. What is normally a private mourning process became very public for her and her family, and led to great healing and unity for her and other mourners. The Advocate covered her experience last year, read it here.

Those looking to show their support for Dallas Police are invited to head to City Hall Plaza, 1500 Marilla, tonight at 6:30 p.m. The community will gather for a flag procession, a moment of silence, a commemorative walk, messages and prayers. The tribute will last until 9 p.m.
