One great thing happens in March in Dallas: bands from around the world book shows here on their way to Austin for SXSW. And it just so happens we have heaps of the best live music venues right here in East Dallas.
With the impending and much maligned closing of the Gypsy Tea Room in Deep Ellum, venues that size (800-1,000 folks) are getting increasingly fewer in these parts. The Granada Theater will probably pick up some of Gypsy’s shows for April and the coming months, (they’ve already picked up TV on the Radio).
But be at the Granada on Monday, April 2, to let the sounds of Austin’s Explosions in the Sky wash over you and leave your ears ringing for a day or so. They’re an instrumental wall-of-sound band that manages to sound romantic, wistful, expansive, delicate and powerful all while perfectly capturing a breezy, sun-drenched Texas sky. If you’re not familiar with their music, check out the film Friday Night Lights or the TV show on NBC every Wednesday at 7 p.m. They did the soundtrack for the film and much of their music is used on the show. They also just put out a new album called All of a Sudden I Miss Everyone. It’s amazing how these guys have gone from unheard of to playing Late Night with Conan O’Brien in just a few years.
And an added bonus: Dallas staple The pAper chAse is opening for them. Don’t get me wrong; I’m all for the national touring shows that will visit Dallas with the opening of House of Blues in May, but people, get out there and support Dallas’ local music venues!
