Newly elected Dallas City Council members Paula Blackmon and David Blewett took their oaths of office Monday at an inauguration ceremony in which Forest Hills neighbor Eric Johnson was also sworn in as mayor.
Blackmon and Blewett thanked supporters Monday morning and encouraged them to attend the free ceremony at the Winspear Opera House.
“What a great journey these last six months have been and because of your support, we successfully crossed the finish line and will be sworn in,” Blackmon said in an email to supporters. “I cannot thank you enough for your belief in my abilities to serve you.”
Johnson said in a tweet that after the inauguration, he would like to work with the City Council to hire more police officers to make Dallas safer.
After the new council is sworn in on Monday, we need a plan to hire more police officers, improve compensation & benefits for our current officers, and improve morale within @DallasPD. I will do everything in my power as Mayor to make Dallas a safer city.
