If you’ve always wanted to drink Mexican spirits at a cantina in Oaxaca, Mexico, but never had the means to get there, our neighborhood has the next best thing.
The owners of the taqueria El Come Taco opened the new cocktail bar La Viuda Negra, which serves mezcal-inspired cocktails in East Dallas.
The bar opened in May at 2513 N. Fitzhugh Ave. next to El Come. The taqueria, run by brothers Javier and Luis Villalva, is know for street tacos made with brisket, chorizo and unconventional meats like calves’ brains.
But the brothers have always wanted to open a bar that channels the spirit of the Mexican region Oaxaca, according to CultureMap. Before the bar’s launch, they traveled to Mexico to research flavors and mezcals that are hard to find elsewhere.
La Viuda Negra, which means “black widow” in Spanish, will have season cocktails created with juices made in house daily. Opening menu items include the “Ultima Palabra” with Ilegal mezcal, Chartreuse, lime and Lexardo Maraschino and the “Black Bunny” with Espina Negra mezcal, el Tesoro tequila, lime and piloncillo.
CultureMap reports the bar will also offer a fermented agave juice called curados de pulque. The beverage is similar to tequila but made by fermenting instead of distilling. It’s considered one of Mexico’s most ancient drinks and has a texture the BBC likens to mucous.
The bar is open from 5 p.m. to 2 a.m. every day.
