Zac Crain, an editor at the American Airlines in-flight magazine and the subject of more than a few flattering portraits in various outlets around town, has been kicked off the May mayoral ballot for not having enough signatures on his petition. Crain was one of three people whose petitions were tossed, cutting the mayoral field to 10.

What does this mean? Well, I won’t get a cushy consulting job with the city (Crain is my editor at American Way), but more importantly, it eliminates one of the most interesting wild cards in the race. Crain, depending on which pundit was talking, had an opportunity to bring voters to the polls who normally don’t go — 30-somethings, and particularly men. The last time that happened was for the election to build the American Airlines Center, and those voters were part of the difference in getting the arena approved.

The election will still be much fun (I’m already excited that Tom Leppert is calling Max Wells a tax and spend liberal), but it will probably take a more traditional, whoever wins North Dallas gets to be mayor spin.
