The pit bull that former Rangers pitcher Yu Darvish adopted from an East Dallas foster family two years ago has died, the Dallas Morning News reported.

The pitcher told the publication his dog Sage died early last week at 3 or 4 years old.

“Two weeks ago, she wasn’t doing well and when they took her to the vet, they did surgery and found cancer all over her body,” he told the Morning News.

Darvish, who is a starting pitcher for the Cubs, adopted the dog in 2017 from East Dallas neighbor Karly Edington. Edington worked at a veterinary clinic where a woman brought Sage after finding her on the street with her stomach hanging out from a ruptured mass in her breast, according to the Morning News.

The dog went home with Edington after surviving emergency surgery, but neighbors soon complained of her barking, the paper previously reported. Edington tweeted a picture of Sage in an attempt to find her a permanent home. When Darvish saw the tweet, he made plans to adopt her.

In a Facebook post Friday, Edington said Sage’s death was bittersweet.

“I know that dog had the best life a canine companion could ever ask for,” she wrote. “I know Yu and his family did right by her, and now Sage leaves us with the gift of love… unconditional. Goodnight Sage, and I hope to see your happy puppy face again.”
