The coffee cart is staffed by students with special needs, who serve and deliver coffee to teachers every day of the school year. The students serve everything from French vanilla coffee to decaf peach honey tea, according to the Dallas ISD news service, The Hub.

Instructor Breanna Nelson, who teaches the functional life skills class, started the cart about a year ago with the goal of helping students with disabilities earn money and learn the skills needed to land a job.

“It’s a lot more than serving coffee because, historically, people with disabilities are not employed at the same rate as people without disabilities,” Nelson said. “If we can give them the life skills, the communication skills and the experience of working a real job, it will give them a foot in the door toward a job when they graduate.”

The Percolators are recipients of the Junior League of Dallas annual Grants for Innovative Teaching, which awarded 50 Dallas ISD educators with grants of up to $2,000 each.
