Arboretum Village rendering

Ace Hardware is, indeed, leaving its longtime spot in the Lakewood shopping center at Gaston and Abrams, according to a Dallas Morning News story, but we’re not losing it altogether. The DMN says Ace is moving down the street to the soon-to-begin-construction Arboretum Village at Gaston-Garland-Grand. Lincoln Property company bought a portion of the Lakewood shopping center a couple of years ago, and last year purchased the old White Rock YMCA and Far West nightclub property at Gaston-Garland-Grand with plans to overhaul it.

Prior to this announcement, we heard from several neighbors who seemed dismayed about losing Ace. They had heard that the neighborhood hardware store would be replaced by a CVS (as have we, from several sources, though nothing is confirmed).

Ace and North Carolina-based grocer Fresh Market are the only two tenants Lincoln has confirmed for Arboretum Village so far. The Dallas Morning News noted that construction should begin in a couple of months. It also said that Lincoln is redoing the building in the Lakewood shopping center in which Ace currently resides, and quoted Lincoln Property as saying it is “talking to several prospective tenants about taking Lakewood Hardware’s old business location.” So again, CVS is not certain; it’s just the most oft-cited replacement.

Other new tenants Lincoln is moving into the Lakewood shopping center include Liberty Burger in the former Catalina 5G Boutique and School of Contemporary Ballet Dallas spots, and FLOSS Dental where the UPS Store once was (Lincoln moved the UPS Store to Gaston and Grand, across from the future Arboretum Village).

Lincoln would be required to open the Fresh Market in Arboretum Village by Dec. 31, 2014, under the terms of a $1 million City of Dallas grant. We’re talking with Ace and will have an update on its plans soon.
