The Academy Award for Best Animated Short went to “The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore” Sunday night. The film’s co-director is Brandon Oldenburg, who now lives in Baton Rouge. Oldenburg was a creative director at Reel FX in Deep Ellum when he co-designed the Traveling Man sculptures for DART.
By the time the Traveling Man became a reality in 2009, Oldenburg already had moved to Louisiana because of a burgeoning film-making scene in Shreveport, comprised of former New Orleans residents displaced after Hurricane Katrina.
Oldenburg told Unfair Park it was hard to leave Dallas. But the move paid off. Oldenburg and his creative partner, William Joyce, walked away with an Oscar.
Their Academy Award-winning short is streaming online this morning. Watch it below.
