Leticia Vargas, a Woodrow Wilson High School senior who volunteers at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children, won the $5,000 Gustavo Ipina Memorial Scholarship. She plans to attend nursing school at Texas Woman’s University.

We met Vargas as part of our April cover story about high school seniors who have overcome hardships to become successful students. She was born with one leg shorter than the other and was in the hospital for two years while doctors worked on fixing it. She was well and strong enough to go back to high school for her senior year. But she stayed dedicated to the hospital that helped her. She’s an inspirational kid.
