Advocate video: David Gary’s life in bloom

For the January Advocate, I had the great pleasure of interviewing David Gary, a man who leads tram tours at the Dallas Arboretum. Gary is special in myriad ways. Among the more significant: he has muscular dystrophy and doesn’t let the fact that he can’t walk keep him from gardening and volunteering untold hours, and secondly, he loves the Arboretum so much, that he drives a hundred miles each way to get to and fro his volunteer gig. I also got great insight from Arboretum staffer Cris Emrich who explained that she feels people who volunteer in retirement lead fuller, happier and healthier lives than they could have imagined.
