It’s 9:15 on Sunday morning and I have just returned from a family reunion disguised as a restaurant opening. As of 8:00 am today, the famous, iconic John’s Cafe is once again screaming out order numbers for throngs of happy diners on Lower Greenville.

There were, indeed, throngs of diners. Lots of familiar faces, lots of kids, lots of Mini Coopers (that’s another story), balloons, cookies, all the trappings of a party. He closed his other location for today only so that he could combine staffs for the special occasion. Good idea. While the staff cooked and passed out food, there was owner John Spyropoulos in the middle of it all passing out hugs, handshakes and smiles. Lots of smiles.

That which was lost has been found. It’s a very good day for East Dallas. My next step is to forward this to friends of ours in Iowa who moved away more than a decade ago, but who still talk about how much they miss the pancakes. Oh, and Jeff, there’s chicken fried steak on the lunch menu. Just FYI. In the meantime, make mine a Breakfast Special, over easy, sausage, hashbrowns and biscuits. Thanks.
