I hope you were able to enjoy the State Fair this October! Learn about the recent
happenings in Dallas ISD below:

Dallas ISD District 2 Monthly Updates:

Dallas ISD’s newly constructed Career Institute North is now up and running. Centrally located at the former Walnut Hill Elementary School, it provides career training and resources for students from nearby high schools, including Hillcrest, Conrad, North Dallas, Thomas Jefferson, and W.T. White. Check out the 17 workforce training opportunities that are currently offered!

The Dallas Morning News recently highlighted a Dallas ISD policy that is helping a bigger and more diverse group of kids achieve a stronger foundation for college, career and military readiness. Rather than having families opt into advanced math, they are instead given the choice to opt-out. To increase access to rigor, a version of Dallas ISD’s approach is in the process of being replicated statewide via a bipartisan bill passed in the last state legislative session.

We are thankful for two Dallas ISD lifesavers this month. Both Israel Alfaro and Raquel Radford Baker were quick-thinking heroes when they jumped in to save lives! Mr. Alfaro, an English teacher at W.H. Adamson High School, played a crucial role in saving the life of a hot air balloon pilot, and Ms. Radford Baker, a bus driver for the district’s Transportation Services, performed the Heimlich maneuver to save a 7-year-old who was choking.

D2 Bond Construction Updates: Campus infrastructure upgrades funded by the proceeds from the 2020 Bond continue across the district. Dallas ISD has a dedicated 2020 Bond website chock full of detailed information! Visit dallasisd.org/bond2020. October Board Meeting Debrief: At our October board meeting, in response to Senate Bill 763 passed by the 88th Texas Legislature, the Dallas ISD Board of Trustees took a required vote and unanimously supported a resolution against accepting school chaplains to provide support, services and programs for students.

As always, please do not hesitate to reach out to me if you have thoughts, ideas, questions, concerns, or simply want to say hello.

Best,
Sarah Weinberg
