The Greenville Avenue Area Business Association doubled its contribution this year to the higher education of area students, thanks to Mavericks owner Mark Cuban and the Greenville Avenue St. Patrick’s Day Parade, which Cuban saved.

Every year, G.A.A.B.A. awards scholarships to kids at Woodrow Wilson, Conrad and North Dallas high schools. A typical donation, G.A.A.B.A. reps say, is about 7,500 — raised via events such as the St. Paddy’s parade and Savor Mexico — divided among three students.

This year, because of The Cubes’ generous financial support, they gave a lot more.

In February, Cuban made a donation to prevent cancelation of the long-running Saint Patrick’s Day Parade, and gave an additional $25,000 to G.A.A.B.A.’s scholarship fund.

The board and DISD collectively decided to allocate the donation over the next three years, ultimately tripling the number of students impacted.

This year, $15,000 was divided up and awarded to nine students at the aforementioned high schools. The scholarship recipients demonstrated leadership and excellence through academic achievement and extracurricular activities, including a commitment to community service.

From Woodrow, Liz Magallanes received $2,500; Nicholas Chatham received $1,500 and Alejandra Hernandez received $1,000. We’ve written about young Chatham, the class of 2012 valedictorian, a time or two, and you might have spotted Magallanes on School Zone.
