Trucks fanned out through my neighborhood near Dan D. Rogers yesterday, collecting the piles of storm debris that I wrote about on Sunday. At 4:30 p.m, they were even on the west side of Abrams, picking up more garbage.

A coincidence? Perhaps. But given that city officials had assured us that all of the storm debris had been carted away, it’s more likely that someone from downtown saw not only my post but your comments, offering details about even more debris and your frustration with City Hall and the cleanup process.

I got an email Monday from a reader telling me to stop whining about this, and that the city and The Morning News were doing the best they could. That may be, but it didn’t get the debris picked up. Journalism and an involved citizenry got the debris picked up. Which, actually, is the point of the First Amendment and the role of a media in a free society and all that stuff.

And, by the way, congratulations to The Morning News on its Pulitzer Prize.
