Mark Painter's lab at Stonewall Elementary is a place for environmentally responsible learning and lots of fun.

Green Ribbon Schools is an awards program that recognizes schools that promote a healthy and environmentally friendly learning environment. It’s no surprise (see our 2010 article about the learning gardens) that East Dallas’ Stonewall Jackson Elementary was one of 42 schools to receive the honor.

GRS was developed by the Texas Children in Nature Coalition, comprised of Texas education and environmental groups that are working together to provide opportunities for children to learn in nature.

A team of Stonewall teachers, including Susan Clegg, Barbara Uskovich, Sara Jane Rust and Mark Painter, put in many hours recording the school’s outdoor learning activities, including features of the Garden program, Earth Day, and more.

Thanks to the staffers’ hard work, Stonewall not only won a Green Ribbon, but is also the featured school on the program’s home page.
