I chatted with David Timothy  (AKA “the Soup Guy” as they call him on the streets) today about the SoupMobile in Deep Ellum, and he mentioned that their eighth annual Celebrate Jesus event is happening on Monday.

If you haven’t heard of the event, you should check out their website. In fact, even if you have heard of the event, you should check out their website for volunteer information and pictures. I’d never heard about it before, but it sounds like a one of a kind event. Timothy says it’s the only one like it in the country.

In short, they will take 500 homeless men, women and children off the streets, give them clothes, gifts and lots of love, and then treat them to dinner and a room in the Omni Hotel in downtown Dallas for the night. This year the Dallas Symphony Brass Quintet will play for them while they eat, and even Mayor Mike Rawlings plans to serve.

It started eight years ago with 100 people and has grown since then, Timothy told me.

“Most of us have a pretty nice Christmas every year, but there’s thousands and thousands of homeless people who don’t have a nice Christmas, and it always bothered me. So I thought, ‘If it bothers you so much, do something about it,'” he explained.

Not only has the number of people who attend the event grown, but the number of volunteers has as well. This year, more than 2,000 people have signed up to volunteer. Timothy says most of the volunteer slots are full, but there are still some opportunities available if you’re interested in serving on Christmas Eve this year.
