The East Dallas dive bar Ships Lounge is hoping to return to its roots with a late-night permit that would allow the establishment to operate after midnight, according to a zoning change application.

The application filed last month with the City of Dallas requests a special-use permit for a bar, lounger or tavern. The permit would keep the doors open until 2 a.m.

The permit was filed more than three years after it ran into opposition from the Lower Greenville Neighborhood Association, the Dallas Morning News reported.

Ships had previously operated until 2 a.m. under previous ownership, and City staff recommended approval of its special-use permit for another four years. But the neighborhood association wanted Jason Boso, who owned Ships at the time, to prove he was a good owner. That meant no 911 calls, no tickets and no code problems.

The bar at 1613 Greenville Ave. is required to have a special-use permit, which started in 2011 to crack down on noise and crime in the area.
