Ground will break on the Samuell-Grand Family Aquatic Center this Friday at 10 a.m. The new pool will be a part of a master plan that will attempt to better connect the sprawling park, which includes a pool, tennis center, two golf courses, amphitheater, athletic fields and recreation center.

The new aquatic center will include a children’s Sprayground with a multi-level play unit that includes ground geysers and a beach entry. Other amenities include individual water slides into a plunge pool, eight lap lanes, a lazy river and resort-style pool. The bathhouse will be renovated, but the new construction will seek to pay homage to the original architecture and will attempt to preserve any significant shade trees.

Jesse Moreno, the District 2 Dallas Park Board member, hopes that this pool will draw a wide demographic, with the beach entry being ideal for toddlers, and plans for senior aerobics classes targeting older swimmers. He also hopes to create a partnership between the center and the Woodrow Wilson High School swim team.

The new pool construction will officially start after the pool season ends on the last day of August, and should be done by April or May of 2018. The pool renovation will cost just under $7 million, funded by bond dollars. Tietze will also be getting an upgrade.

Correction: This version has been updated to reflect the correct ground-breaking time, 10 a.m., not 11 a.m.
