293About 30 people attended the open house this morning at the East Dallas Boys and Girls Club on Worth. Most of them were funders, there to celebrate the new renovations, take a looksie at the facility, and get an update on the club’s renovation progress.

The club sees about 150 to 160 students on any given day, says Zane King, director of grant administration. The East Dallas club has been there since 1976 as a boys club, and they added girls to the program in 1990.

The club has recently completed phase two of renovations, which was the reason for today’s open house, says President and CEO Charles English. Since summer 2012, between phase one and two, they have spent $250,000 on renovations. They did everything from leveling the foundation, to redoing the bathrooms, to updating the heating and air conditioning and putting in a new gym floor.

Phase three of the renovations should begin some time mid-summer. It’ll include remolding the kitchen/cafeteria and a facelift for the reading room/library. English figures the final installation will cost about $50,000.

All of this is on top of their $300,000 annual costs of operation and maintenance, English says.

In other words, they’re looking for people in the community who want to become long-term friends, to help them serve more than 6000 kids a year. Not a bad investment in my book.
