Macaw at Fair ParkHigh winds Sunday caused all kinds of trouble, including disrupting the Wings of Wonder bird show at the brand new Summer Adventures in Fair Park. The theme park features a number of rides and shows, including a couple of macaws that fly from one point at Fair Park to another as part of the show.

But high winds during one of the Sunday shows caused the macaws (named “Moe” and “Curly”) to fly off-course and completely off the Fair Park grid. State Fair public relations people put out an all-points media bulletin Monday morning asking for help locating the birds.

And Peter Ross, a Forest Hills resident on San Benito just east of White Rock Lake, heard about the problem, noticed a couple of colorful parrot-looking birds in his tree a couple of miles from Fair Park, so he called the State Fair with the news.

WFAA-Channel 8 chronicled the homecoming ceremony, which featured the birds’ trainer calling the birds from their neighborhood perch with peanuts. If you listen carefully as the second bird lands on its trainer’s arm, you can hear it say “hi” to the trainer.

So the bird shows will go on again this weekend (Saturday, Sunday and Memorial Day Monday) and  next weekend, and then daily beginning June 7, when Summer Adventures begins operates daily through Aug. 18. The theme park features a one-price entry fee ($29.95 for adults, $24.95 for children) and includes all-you-care-to-do on 30 rides and a number of shows, as well as pay-as-you-go food and games.

I’ve visited the park a couple of times (my wife works there), and it’s a good value in terms of rides and activities. And since the park is essentially doing a “sneak preview” during May to get ready for the summer season, you have a little more elbow room now than you will during the summer to hop aboard rides, see the shows and enjoy Fair Park.
