Well, it was a secret to me.
On a tip from Margo, marketing rep for Greenling DFW, I visited with The Corner Market’s owner, Chuck Cole. Margo had learned Chuck uses fresh eggs from his own chickens at the market. And THEN I found out that wasn’t all…he also has a rooftop garden. Herbs, veggies and some floral items for his shop are grown right there on the roof.
It doesn’t get more locally sourced than that!
Currently, squash, herbs, some greens, corn, peas and a few other odds and ends are sprouting up, up there.
Awesomely eco, Chuck even has a rain barrel collecting rainwater and condensation which is piped to water the beds. He wants to have many barrels so he can reuse as much water as possible. But, sadly, was discouraged when one of his two barrels was recently stolen (a two-day caper of drain then swipe, at that. boo!). Hopefully the theft was a fluke and won’t happen again.
The extremely fresh eggs are limited so one must get there first thing at breakfast for a chance at them.
Or visit at lunch for a salad containing some fresh rooftop ingredients.
Deservedly, The Corner Market is featured in the just released (May 7th 2013) Southern Living “Off the Eaten Path: Second Helpings” book.
Congrats, Chuck. DFF is so happy to learn of your extra efforts to offer fresh, local, clean food to Dallasites.
Keep up the great work.
