A man was found dead Wednesday in an Old East Dallas apartment fire, a spokesman for Dallas Fire-Rescue said.

Firefighters responded just after 5 p.m. to the San Miguel apartments at 4624 Lafayette St. near the intersection of North Fitzhugh and Ross avenues, spokesman Jason Evans said.

Smoke and flames were erupting from a second-story unit when firefighters arrived. They extinguished the blaze in half an hour, Evans said.

While putting out the fire, firefighters found a man in the hallway, where he was later pronounced dead.

The cause of the fire and the man’s death is still being determined.

Evans said most of the damage was contained to the apartment where the fire started. An adjacent unit also sustained minor damage, displacing one tenant.
