The costs of maintaining the Lizard Lounge during the coronavirus shutdown were overwhelming, and the iconic nightclub must close after 28 years in business, the owner said Friday in a Facebook post.

In the post, owner Don Nedler thanked his employees and guests who had visited the bar at 2424 Swiss Ave.

Hundreds of people commented on the post as they shared their condolences and favorite memories from the club.

Although the closing of the Lizard Lounge stings, Nedler said he has plans for the future.

“The world we knew has changed, and we had to change to survive,” he said. “I’ll post more info about our future plans soon. Till then, thanks for the memories, and we’ll see you soon.”

On Fridays and Saturdays, the Deep Ellum club was known for electronic dance music provided by the best local, national and international DJs.

On Sundays, the Lizard Lounge played neo gothic, industrial and electro rock during an event known as “The Church.” Nedler said in a separate Facebook post that The Church will continue at the It’ll Do Club at 4322 Elm St. as soon as it is safe to operate.

“We have a crazy plan for The Church and will be announcing soon,” he said.
