You’ve probably driven by Jarams Donuts countless times since it opened in December 2018. Mouth watering from the vision of specialty “artisan” donuts covered in cream cheese, powdered sugar and candy pieces, you’ve likely been too hungry to notice the grammatical error on its sign.

While the rest of us were getting chocolate wasted on donuts, East Dallas neighbor and D Magazine editor Tim Rogers had the clarity of mind to notice the mistake and bring us today’s vocabulary lesson.

An “artisan” is a person. Unless Jarams is filling its donuts with the remains of its skilled bakers, the correct term should be “artisanal.” The word is an adjective used to describe products made by artisans.

As a journalist, my love for the English language runs deeper than most, but my love for sugar runs deeper still. Writing this post has made me hungry, and I think I can find it within myself to overlook this minuscule food crime.
