The eighth-grade football team and its fans braved frigid temperatures to win the game at John Kincaide Stadium.

The game’s only score came on a 25-yard pass from quarterback Keith Paige to receiver Joe Allen. It was followed by a successful 2-point conversion.

“We knew we had a good team this year, and they were a special group of kids,” coach Cody Nelson said. “The boys worked hard all year long in 100-degree weather and 30-degree weather. The kids are excited.”

J.L. Long (9-0) won its first champion in five years.

“Before then it was 40 years, so it’s big time for the community and the school,” Nelson said.

The Buccaneers advanced to the championship after beating T. W. Browne in the bi-district game.

Before the championship, students and teachers decked the halls until they were covered in school pride.
