Cue the “Rocky” theme music and lace up the old Nikes, East Dallas dwellers. The annual J.L. Long Run one-mile fun run and 5k race is Thursday at 5:30 and 6:30 p.m., respectively. The fastest runners in age categories will win bling, and there will be food, entertainment and T-shirts for all participants.

If dramatic-movie style slow motion happens to be your actual pace … if you’re more of a Homer Simpson than a Sly Stallone, no worries. This event is the J.L. Long Middle School PTAs sole fundraising event, so every entry counts, even if you can’t run the whole 3.1 miles. “Proceeds from the event provide the operating funds for the PTA to sponsor educational programs,” organizers say, “and to provide those extras that aren’t provided for in DISD budgets.”
