The Dallas Police Department reported this week that a man was shot and killed after breaking into an apartment just before 3:30 a.m. Saturday. ESPN reported this weekend that New Orleans Pelicans guard Bryce Dejean-Jones was the person killed during the break in.

According to police reports Dejean-Jones was shot by David Allen Corrigan, 22,  just before 3:30 a.m. Saturday. Corrigan told police that he heard someone kicking in the front door of his residence in the 2500 block of Bennett Avenue.

“(Corrigan), who was asleep in the bedroom, heard the individual enter and retrieved a handgun.”

Corrigan stated that he called out, but did not receive any answer. Corrigan fired his gun after Dejean-Jones kicked his bedroom door.

When police arrived on-scene, they found Dejean-Jones with a gunshot wound to the abdomen collapsed under a breezeway. He was taken to a local hospital where he later died from his injuries.

Multiple sites have reported that Dejean-Jones trying to get into his girlfriends apartment, but broke into the wrong home.

According to ESPN, “Dejean-Jones was visiting his girlfriend in Dallas for his daughter’s first birthday, which was Saturday, according to (Dejean-Jones’ agent, Scott) Nichols. He said the girlfriend returned to the apartment first while Dejean-Jones went for a walk after they had gone out.”

Nichols later told the Associated Press, “He went to the wrong apartment unfortunately and I think he thought his girlfriend locked him out, so he was knocking on the door, banging on the door, it’s locked. So one thing led to another.”

Dejean-Jones was 23.

Dallas Police Homicide is conducting an investigation into the incident.
