Woodrow's JV Cheer team made their homecoming float on SaturdayHomecoming can be a pretty big deal and it’s definitely true for the students of Woodrow Wilson High.

And while the festivities may not officially be starting until Thursday, everyone at the school has spent quite some time preparing for this week. It’s fair to say homecoming really got started on Oct. 1 when the famous mums of Texas went on sale for students at the school.

The elaborate strands of ribbons, and whatever else might be attached, may not have found much popularity outside the state of Texas but for students here they’re just as important as the homecoming game itself.

On Thursday, the Woodrow Wilson parade kicks off homecoming at 5 p.m. with the route beginning at Woodrow and weaving through Lakewood before coming back to the school about an hour later.

This year’s grand marshal will be “Blazing Saddles” star Burton “Bubba” Gilliam, a Dallas native.

A pep rally and cookout will take place at the school immediately after the parade.

Then on Friday at 7:30 p.m., it’s the homecoming football game against the North Dallas Bulldogs at Franklin Field.

Of course, once a homecoming king and queen have been crowned there’s one last tradition to carry out: the homecoming dance. Students may have to wait until Saturday for the annual event but with everything else happening in between it should be here before we know it.
