The old Dixie House location (as it will always be known to locals) has a new tenant. The Sugarbacon sign will come down and make way for Kozy Kitchen, a health food restaurant with gluten-free dishes, extensive breakfast and Italian risottos, pastas and salads that feature salmon, venison and buffalo.
Most dinner options range between $14 and $20, which is a step below the prices at Sugarbacon, which lasted less than a year. D Magazine reports that part of Kozy Kitchen’s reason for relocating from McKinney in uptown to Lakewood is to have more parking. The restaurant will add a gluten-free kids menu to reflect the neighborhood’s needs, but it will also add a bar with local beers. Cozy Kitchen will compete against Penne Pomodoro and Zoës Kitchen in the space at 6400 Gaston Ave.
Shell Shack, the crab-infused seafood spot in Uptown is moving to the space that briefly housed Mellow Mushroom on Henderson. Culturemap reports that the new location should be open within the next couple of months. It will be a larger space for the restaurant and will feature a sizable patio out front. The restaurant has four other locations in the DFW area. The Henderson location will be at 2326 N. Henderson Ave.
The black widow of restaurant locations has another taker. Chombo’s makes way for Gallo Nero Italian Bistro, a restaurant from the owners of Roma’s Italian in Lancaster that is continuing the trend of naming an Italian restaurant after an animal and a color. Culturemap reports that the restaurant will serve traditional Italian food along with New York style brick oven pizza. The owner seemed unconcerned that Greenville Avenue Pizza Co. is just steps away. Gallo Nero, Italian for black rooster, will serve traditional fare in the tradition of now closed Pietro’s and Nero’s, which used to operate in the area. Gallo Nero will follow Combo’s, La Bodega, Bohemian Cafe, Jo 24 and Jack’s Southern Comfort. None lasted more that 17 months. Gallo Nero Italian Bistro will be at 1905 Greenville Ave.
