Ruben Alvarado, 24, has been charged with first-degree murder for killing Chynal Lindsey, who was 26 when she died.

The trial began Monday when prosecutors presented their opening statement and began calling witnesses. The defense did not present an opening statement.

Prosecutors said Lindsey had been beaten to death and strangled with multiple weapons, the Dallas Morning News reported. Lindsey was found in the lake June 1, 2019, with a belt still around her neck.

They also said they would show text messages between Lindsey and Alvarado sent May 31, before he drove Lindsey from Arlington to his Mesquite apartment, NBC 5 reported. And there is blood evidence that shows Lindsey was in the backseat of Alvarado’s car, prosecutors said.

Cell phone data revealed that Alvarado and Lindsey’s phones were near each other June 1 and by White Rock Lake, but defense attorneys said that data isn’t exact and that both people could have been near each other but not together.
