“I watched Woodrow perform last fall at a football playoff game,” he says. “I commented to my fellow directors that I would be teaching the Woodrow band someday. I just really liked their kids and their vibe.”

The other directors teased him about that statement for the rest of the year. But then Chris Walls, the director who had taken the Woodrow band in a new direction, resigned to conduct the Dallas Pops Orchestra. Evetts aggressively pursued the open teaching job as soon as he heard about it. He says it’s a dream come true to be directing the band now.

The band only has about 35 members now, and Evetts is recruiting students “from color guard to drum line to our wind sections, we’re starting from ground zero,” he says. Students don’t necessarily need musical experience to join the band. Summer band practice is underway now.
