It’s obviously not unusual to see DISD’s Michael Hinojosa at chamber meetings and educational conferences, but I’ve also bumped into him twice just out in the community, and both times he was at sporting events with his family. Last year, a few neighborhood dads and sons went to an SMU football game; we bought the least expensive seats sold and wound up near the top of the endzone bleachers. There, a few rows in front of us, was Dr. Hinojosa with his sons. I’m sure he could have wrangled an invitation to one of the many suites around the stadium or used his DISD credit card to buy some non-nosebleed seats (I’m just kidding!), but there he was far from the well-heeled crowd and up in the cheap seats with us. And last night, my wife and I attended a totally meaningless, doesn’t-count-in-the-standings junior high baseball scrimmage at Franklin/Hillcrest field featuring J.L. Long students, and there sitting in the bleachers was Dr. Hinojosa, presumably there to watch their son play with the Franklin team. Like I said earlier, this wasn’t a game that mean anything to anyone except the kids playing, so I think it says a lot about him that he was there.
