Young brains don’t stop learning over the summer, which is why Dallas ISD is committed to offering learning opportunities even when school isn’t in session.
Dallas ISD and the City of Dallas are again partnering under the umbrella Dallas City of Learning to bring Dallas families dozens of free and fun summer activities for students of all ages. The nonprofit Big Thought will manage the partnership.
I encourage all District 2 families to come to the Discover Summer Fair happening April 27 at Billy Earl Dade Middle School, 2727 Al Lipscomb Way, and learn about these free and low-cost summer activities. Families will be able to register for some of the camps while at the Discover Summer Resource fair.
Some of the many summer learning opportunities available to students in District 2 include:
- Extended Learning Summer Camps at Dan D. Rogers School are open to students at the school and will provide enrichment and opportunities to experience learning in new ways;
- Dallas Public Library branches, including the Lakewood Branch located at 6121 Worth St., will host weekly activities such as live performances, hands-on experiences and brain puzzles;
- The Dallas City of Learning Turn UP camp is open to all students ages 4 and up and includes engaging STEM activities such as 3D printing;
- The Discover Theater Summer Camp is open to all students ages 7–14 and will help kids dive into the world of theater.

International Wax Museum at Franklin
Benjamin Franklin International Exploratory Academy students hosted an International Wax Museum in late March, which incorporated projects from multiple classes and presented information about countries across the world. The wax museum was one of the first major comprehensive school wide International Baccalaureate-related research project undertaken by the scholars.
Elementary student pushes for free state park access
A student at Mockingbird Elementary has proposed a bill modeled on a federal program that would allow Texas fifth-graders and those who accompany them to enter state parks for free.
Volunteers beautify District 2 schools
More than 400 volunteers beautified 23 Dallas ISD elementary schools, several of which are in District 2, as part of the Campus Community Day organized by United to Learn.
Read for Me a big success
More than 1,100 students and parents attended an interactive reading event that brought books, learning, and Asian culture to life. Read for Me, the district’s annual literacy event, and the accompanying Asian Festival happened March 23.
