East Dallas will welcome a new educational facility, Cathedral Montessori School, a preschool opening at St. Matthew’s Cathedral at 5100 Ross Ave. The Advocate spoke with preschool director Sarah Shafer to provide insight ahead of the school’s opening.

What will the school offer academically?

We strive to be a center for excellence in Montessori education. We will have religious lessons and chapel throughout the week as well.

What sets this school apart from others?

Montessori education distinguishes itself from traditional styles of education by placing the child at the center of learning. Teachers guide children in a more child-directed way, allowing them to discover and follow their specific interests. The environments are meant to serve the children in a loving, respectful and peaceful way.

When is the opening, how long has the process taken?

We are hopeful for this spring 2024, gradually opening one classroom at a time. We’ve had a great amount of support from members of the cathedral, consultants, child care licensing and fire department, who have helped to see all of this come together over the last six months.

What age groups will the school cater to?

We will be serving children ages six weeks to six years old.
