The achievement follows last year’s wrestler placing in the top five at the state competition, ending a 25-year hiatus without any placers since wrestling became a UIL competition.

On Saturday, Feb. 10, two Wildcat wrestlers qualified for state, Jacob Barrilleaux who finished second at 106 pounds and William Braud who finished fifth at 126 pounds.

Both athletes competed in the UIL Texas State Wrestling Tournament held Feb. 17-18 at the Berry Center in Cypress, Texas

Barrilleaux won by a pin down in round one against Comal Smithson Valley then moved to the quarterfinals against Dumas High School. The junior had a huge quarterfinal win over the No. 2 ranked wrestler in Texas, Carlos Magallanes of Dumas. Jacob won by a score of 15-10, securing his state title.

After wrestling in the State Semifinals against Aodhan Jimenez of Ellison High School on Saturday, Feb. 17, Barrilleaux finished fourth overall, a significant jump from his starting rank of 11th at the UIL Texas State Wrestling Tournament.

Barrilleaux now holds the title as Woodrow’s highest state place finisher for wrestling.
