The Observer’s Jim Schutze has a thoughtful column this week about neighborhood crime, which appears to be on the rise again after a period of relative calm. Jim writes about the impact on crime of having mounted video cameras throughout a neighborhood. Schutze visits a neighborhood just north of LBJ off Audelia, which has installed a bunch of cameras to monitor public places, and finds out that crime there has dwinded — if not to nothing — significantly. Residents credit the cameras; Jim quotes one woman, when asked whether she prefers cameras or privacy, as saying "I have thought a lot about that, but I think I’d rather have safety right now." Something to think about, that’s for sure…
