Starting this fall, all incoming ninth-graders at Bryan Adams High School will choose one of four pathways to take them through the next four years: Arts, Communications and Media; Health Sciences and Technology; Business Marketing and Management; and Human Development and Social Sciences.

This new program, under the Dallas Achieves! plan, is an effort to improve student performance. From what I can tell, the students will still be required to take core curriculum classes, but will have some modifications for specialized instruction. Plus, all students on the pathways will be expected to participate in some dual credit or Advanced Placement courses.

Next year, the only students to feed into the DISD schools offering the pathways are eligible for the program; other high schools besides Adams are W.H. Adamson, David W. Carter, L.G. Pinkston, H. Grady Spruce and W.W. Samuell. Eventually, however, the programs will be open to students who apply from throughout the district.

Each school is offering different pathways, based on its students’ needs. They all fall under these general categories: health science, architecture and construction, communications, law, information technology, business, education, hospitality and tourism, or the arts.
