There’s a hole in the middle of San Fernando Way, courtesy of the City of Dallas.

It is not simply an annoying pothole. It is several feet in diameter.

The one pictured above is near the intersection of San Fernando and White Rock Drive. (Note: There may be another on San Fernando closer to San Rafael, but with the machinery in the way, it’s hard to tell. If any Forest Hills residents have more information on this, please let us know.)

Crews are replacing about 4,300 feet of existing wastewater pipeline along Garland Road that’s deteriorated and in poor condition, a public affairs officer for the City of Dallas told us. The new pipe will be relocated to San Rafael Drive, San Fernando Way and St. Francis Avenue.

Work will affect pipe along Garland from San Rafael to St. Francis.

In addition to replacing the pipe, the work will eliminate the risk of failure that could affect part of the White Rock Lake Trail near Forest Hills.

This project is scheduled to be completed this fall.

There are some detours in place in the area, and portions of the street will be closed to install a new wastewater main. But the city spokesperson said most of the construction is going to be done so that no full street closures are expected.

The contractor has to comply with the traffic control plan approved by the Department of Public Works. And normal working hours are 7 a.m.-7 p.m. daily, except Sundays, when no work is allowed without approval.

To report concerns about the contractor’s working hours or activities, contact the Dallas Water Utilities inspection staff, whose contact information is in this notice.

Letters to let people know about the start of construction were hand delivered to residents within and next to the project limits, and DWU inspection staff also met with homeowners association representatives, the city spokesperson said.

Lauren Williams, who lives at the corner of San Fernando and White Rock, said she didn’t know about the project ahead of time and said construction crews sometimes began work before 7 a.m.
