Dallas Animal Services will be hosting a coyote education meeting in District 9 from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, May 21 at the Bath House Cultural Center at 521 E. Lawther Drive. The meeting is aimed at delivering “information vital to public safety and animal wellbeing regarding recent coyote activity,” according to a flyer for the event.

The “recent coyote activity” mentioned may be in reference to an incident that occurred last month when a coyote reportedly chased two children near the southwestern side of White Rock Lake. The coyote was eventually chased off by a parent, but the children did sustain minor injuries, according to a City of Dallas press release.

Yelling, waving your arms and throwing things near (not at) a coyote can usually scare them off if you find yourself face-to-face with one, according to a previous Advocate post. Dallas Animal Services’ website also warns that coyotes may hang around humans if there’s a chance of food, like in unsecured trash, bird feed or pet food. Limiting these coyote snacks can help keep them away.

You can call 469-676-9813 if you see a coyote. If the animal appears to be injured, it’s best not to interact with it and contact 311 instead.
