Music has always been a major part of Brigitte Mena’s life. As early as high school, she was creating her own original music and went on to found her first rock band as a freshman in college.

Today, Mena teaches private lessons in voice, piano, guitar and ukulele for ages 3 and up in Lakewood/East Dallas and Highland Park.

But while her love for music was constant, she didn’t always know she would end up teaching.

During her freshman year of college, as she began studying classical voice, Mena realized she didn’t want to be an opera singer. The realization caused her to question what she wanted to do with music.

As time passed, she began teaching private lessons during college. At first, it was simply something happening “on the side.” After completing her studies in vocal performance and psychology, she went on to teach 5th grade and return to school for her masters in education. Through it all, she continued to do private lessons.

“I realized that I really love teaching,” Mena said. “So, I started taking on more clients and then it just grew into a full-time business.”

Mena’s business was growing rapidly. In an effort to handle the volume of clients, she brought on three more teachers to take on private lessons.

“I love it because it combines everything [for me],” Mena said. “Psychology, music and education.”

Now, with 10 years of experience, she’s picked up on what works best for her lessons.

“I’m a proponent of the ‘whole child approach,’” Mena said. “Encompassing the social and emotional side of learning, not just focusing on the academics.”

She’s come a long way since her freshman year.

“I finally found where my heart is really centered when it comes to teaching and music,” Mena shared.”
