Two East Dallas homes will open their doors to visitors on the 13th annual AIA Dallas Tour of Homes, showcasing the most modern and innovative residences in the city.
The first home is located on Clayton Avenue in the Lakewood Hills neighborhood. The owners wanted a new house while also staying in their neighborhood of 30 years. They rebuilt on the same site and created a two-story residence with the main living spaces and master bedroom situated around a central courtyard.
The second story, which includes two additional bedrooms, is set back from the first floor to reduce the home’s scale in relation to its neighbors. The construction also ensured the visibility of a red oak in the front yard that the couple planted three decades ago.
The 3,900-square-foot home was completed in 2017 by Morrison Dilworth + Walls.
The second residence was built in 1952 on Alexander Drive in Lakewood. Maestri Studios redesigned the home and added a second story, a garage, a large back porch and a central front courtyard highlighting a mature live oak in the middle.
The majority of the home was demolished, but the owners wanted to keep the original mid-century modern details in their new 6,600-square-foot residence. Renovators kept a pink limestone planter in the breakfast room and filled the home with wood slat ceilings, pops of color, steel columns, patterned wallpaper and vintage-inspired modern lighting and tile.

The AIA event is Dallas’ only citywide home tour and the only one curated by architects. It highlights seven newly built or renovated residences with courtyards and water features that appeal to empty nesters, young families and millennials.
The two-day tour kicks off Nov. 2 and runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tickets can be purchased online at hometourdallas.com for $30. They may also be purchased during the tour at any of the homes for $35 or $10 for individual homes.
