school1As you might have already heard, the Texas Education Agency reported that 35 Dallas ISD campuses were given “unacceptable” ratings because of low test scores under the state’s Public Education Grant program.

Woodrow Wilson High School and J. L. Long Middle School are still on the infamous list.

Last summer, administration for both schools had to come up with campus improvement plans with input from the community after making the list. There is still the possibility that the schools could come off the list by the end of the school year, according to DISD spokesperson Libby Daniels.

If they do not, both schools will once again make campus improvement plans starting in the summer, so long as state legislature changes don’t affect the process. “We’re really in a state of limbo right now based on what the Texas Legislature does this session,” Daniels says.

The issue will also be briefly addressed at DISD’s public hearing on Thursday, Jan. 24, although no specific schools will be mentioned. The purpose of the public hearing is to share information with the community about the educational performance of campuses in relation to the district and the state for the 2011-12 school year.

The Texas Education Code Chapter 39 requires each district’s board of trustees to publish an annual report that includes the AEIS report and to hold a hearing for public discussion of the report.

The hearing is scheduled for 6 p.m. in the Ada L. Williams Auditorium, in the Administration Building, 3700 Ross.

If you’re interested in making comments at the public hearing, you must register to speak by contacting the Board Services office at (972) 925-3720. Registration will begin at 7:30 a.m., Tue., Jan. 22, and the deadline to register to speak will be Wed., Jan. 23, at 5 p.m.
