In September, a new state law took effect that sidesteps the need to have a concealed handgun permit if you’re going to carry the gun — loaded or unloaded — in your car, according to a DMN story over the weekend. In a state law designed to help slow down carjackers, among other things, Texas residents can now carry guns in our cars, as long as we aren’t gang members, aren’t doing anything else overtly criminal and as long as we keep the gun out of sight (such as in the glove compartment). The News story points out that here are obvious pluses and minuses to the law, primarily for the police in trying to assess just exactly who is a gang member and who isn’t, but the bottom line is that if you want to carry a gun in glove compartment, it’s legal to go for it now — without prior training or state approval.
